There is a difference between a System Freeze (or Hang) and a System becoming unresponsive. When the system becomes unresponsive, your mouse may still move or pushing your Caps or Num Lock button toggles the respective LED. A System Freeze/Hang results in absolutely no response from your system; you can only perform a hard reset or physically cut the power. Although a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) renders the system unresponsive, it is not a Freeze/Hang since it is a controlled response/action by the operating system.
Memory Failure Most system hangs can be associated with some type of hardware failure, typically memory issues. You should run memory diagnostics from bootable media (i.e. CD or USB). Microsoft offers a free memory diagnostic utility that is reliable.
