Note that mostly anti-virus dedicated softwares are listed. Security Suites have been known to significantly impact performance on computers, new and old.
McAfee Anti-virus - McAfee has added anti-spyware and web monitoring to their package. Slow on loading and providing alerts, McAfee works well on older and newer machines.
Norton Anti-virus - The new 2008 version incorporates Anti-spyware functionality, but at a performance price - it is slow to load at startup on older machines. Excellent for multi-core processor based systems.
Windows Live OneCare - Microsoft’s lighter-weight, feature-full security suite. An exception to the other bloated security softwares, this package ensures Windows is tuned up, current, and protected. This software is Recommended by Delphineous!

Virus and Spyware Removal
Malicious software damages systems; sometimes irreversibly. Before reformatting your hard drive, try these programs.
ComboFix - Excellent malware removal. Boot into safe mode and be sure to not interrupt the scan. The scanner will reboot windows and display a report when complete.
Ashampoo AntiSpyWare - Ashampoo has come a long way in Malware detection and removal. This is another excellent tool for cleaning up your computer.
