The best way to protect your computer from Security Threats is to not connect it to the internet or share media with systems that have access to the internet. Of course in most cases this is not practical.
Systems that have less than 512MB of memory and do not contain hyper-threading or multi-core technology should not run the Security Suites manufactured in 2007 or later. These security suites are designed for the more powerful computers manufactured today. Straight-up anti-virus products still operate well on systems 1-3 years old. Coupled with an anti-spyware product you can protect your system. Be careful of “free” security products, most are not reliable.
